Who We Are

Hello Reader,

If you’re reading this, then you probably want to know more about who wrote the story you just read. Great.

After countless conversations about the lack of thoughtful coverage of the border, especially during the SB 1070 debate, it became apparent that something should be done and we were the ones that needed to do it.  You are looking at the result of those conversations.

The first story appeared on the Sonoran Chronicle in March 2010.  Since then, it has grown into an online news portal that publishes several stories each week.

My name is Curtis Prendergast and I run this thing.  I recently finished a graduate degree in Journalism and Latin American Studies at the University of Arizona.  Before I moved to Tucson, I lived in Indiana, Ohio, Philadelphia, Oregon, Florida, Argentina, and Brazil.  In addition to informing people living near the border, the news coverage contained in this website is meant as a resource for people living around the world.  When I write a story I try to answer questions that my friends from all of these places would ask me.  Wherever you may be right now, please let us know what questions about the border you would like answered.

Although I write most of the content on this website, the Sonoran Chronicle is far from a one-man show.  The Chronicle features the work of a group of freelance journalists interested in expanding news coverage of the Arizona / Sonora border.  Many of the journalists that contribute to the Chronicle are journalism students at the UA, but it is an independent publication without any affiliation with the UA.  In addition to journalists, several translators donate their time to making articles published on the Chronicle available to audiences that speak Spanish and Portuguese.
